IBM WebSphere application server is the foundation of the IBM WebSphere software platform. It delivers a high performance transaction engine that can help you build, run, integrate and manage dynamic enterprise-class applications. IBM WebSphere application server is optimized to ease administration in a scalable, single-server deployment environment. This configuration is recommended for organizations that need to build and deploy stand-alone, departmental applications and Web services, but don't require failure bypass or workload-distribution options. Performance-wise WebSphere is a heavy application server suitable for enterprise-customers. Its production environment deployment capabilities are similar to WebLogic's. Unlike other application servers WebSphere supports selected 64-bit platforms. There exists also WebSphere Portal Server for user management and personalization. Other WebSphere related products include: WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus (web services connectivity and JMS messaging), WebSphere MQ (message-orientated middleware integration), WebSphere Process Server (business engine) and IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager Basic for WebSpher (availability and performance monitor).
